Evolutionary biologist Natalie Pilakouta thought it would be an easy theory to test: fish living in Iceland’s geothermal hot springs prefer warmer water than do members of the same species that live in cooler lakes nearby. Yet, when she came to the end of her two-year study, what she found was inconclusive — given the choice, both populations of fish preferred the same, cooler waters.
