4 Ways to Personalize AI Content: AI Content Personalization

Creating content with AI seems pretty easy, right? Type some stuff into ChatGPT (or my free AI writing tools), hit Generate and watch your AI overlord get to work… but as you’ve probably noticed, AI loves to churn out generic-sounding blah.

Enter the art & science of AI content personalization, for when you want AI-created content that actually sounds like it’s written by you.

🔑 AI content personalization is the process of thoughtfully working with AI during the creation stage & the checklist you follow for editing the content it creates—so your output really sounds like came from you. This is what makes the difference between dropping your content into a sea of similar competitors vs publishing something that truly stands out & earns the attention of your audience.

The truth is, anyone can create content with AI (especially when using tools like my very own, RightBlogger)—but it’s what you bring into the process that makes your AI-assisted content, looks, feel, and sound like you… all while creating a more meaningful experience for your audience, too.

Wanna learn how to personalize AI content, so it’s something you can proudly sign your name to? Let’s go:

My Favorite AI Use Case: I used my own Video to Blog tool inside RightBlogger to turn this video👆 into this SEO-optimized blog post here👇 This creates a huge additional traffic opportunity in just 20 minutes of editing work. The best part? Since the AI gets a video of my personalized take on the topic of AI content personalization to work with, this blog post is immediately in my own words, tone, and style.

Why “Generic” AI Content Will Always (Eventually) Lose

Think about it. If you ask an AI tool to “write an article about making espresso at home,” it’ll give you a very basic list of steps.

Not inherently a bad thing… but guess what? That list is probably the exact same set of steps you’ll find copied-and-pasted across countless other blogs that’ve used ChatGPT with a similar prompt. Without your personalization, AI content is incredibly boring.

In my experiments, I’ve found that generic AI-written content…

  1. Doesn’t rank high on Google
  2. Doesn’t build trust with your audience, and…
  3. Certainly doesn’t drive traffic back to your site

The root of the problem? There’s no you in almost all the AI content that comes straight from ChatGPT.

If your goal is to educate, entertain, or forge real connections with your readers & build a business around those relationships, then your voice and your personal experiences are key to doing that.

Without weaving in everything that makes you special into the creation & editing processes of using AI to help generate your content, the outputs you get will turn out flat, impersonal, and honestly… quite forgettable.

1. Start with Your Lived Experience

When I create content using AI, I never rely solely on its knowledge base.

I inject my own stories, lived experiences, and lessons learned from the failures along my journey… these are the things that make me… me. And they’re reasons why I’m qualified to teach in ways that AI will forever be inherently different. (p.s. so are you hehe 😉)

For example, when I wanted to master latte art, I struggled for weeks trying to steam milk properly with my La Spaziale espresso machine at home. I watched YouTube videos, consulted baristas, read online, and experimented a ton. Eventually, I cracked the code, and now I can make lattes with silly art that bring me small moments of joy every morning.

Including real stories from your life (to help personalize AI content) does two important things:

  1. It makes you relatable: Readers see you’re human, just like them, and are more inclined to feel a connection with you.
  2. It adds originality: No one else has your exact same life experiences, which is special in ways that are impossible to quantify.

Think about what unique stories or challenges you’ve faced in your life, in your business, in your niche.

Then, use those examples as the foundational story when prompting the AI you’re working with.

2. Customize AI to Match Your Writing Style

Your tone and style are just as important as the ideas you share. It’s the little things that’ll make your readers feel connected with you.

Think about your own memorable reading experiences. The articles, blog posts, books that really stick with you often feel like they’re written just for you in some small way, right? That’s what you want your audience to feel.

Here’s my refined process that works really well for personalizing your AI prompts:

  • Start with a “humanizing prompt” for the AI: If you’re not sure where to start, tools like RightBlogger can help refine your content’s tone and structure with our built-in features, or you can use the humanization prompt below.
  • Include specific instructions: For example, ask the AI to write at an 8th-grade reading level, connect ideas naturally, and avoid over-complicated language. Tell the AI what format you want your ‘content’ to be in, give it an estimated word count to aim for, and include specifics around the types of formatting elements you wanna see.
  • Add a paragraph describing your tone and style in detail: Think of this as giving the AI a personality adjustment, tailored specifically to you.

Here’s the quick humanization ChatGPT prompt I’ve tuned up over the years:

When writing, follow these writing guidelines:

– Don’t blab.
– Keep sentences brief and clear. Limit to 10-20 words.
– Use everyday words that are easy to understand.
– Pick common words over complex ones. Use technical terms only when needed.
– Avoid words with 4+ syllables. If you must use them, keep surrounding text simple.
– Write for a 8th grade reading level.
– Skip overused business terms and jargon like: delve, digital age, cutting-edge, leverage, proactive, pivotal, seamless, fast-paced, game-changer, quest, realm, landscape, evolve, resilient, thrill, unravel, embark, world.
– Make direct statements without hedging.
– Connect ideas naturally without forced transitions.
– Use standard punctuation.
– Vary sentence structure and punctuation naturally.
– Never use: indeed, furthermore, thus, moreover, notwithstanding, ostensibly, consequently, specifically, notably, alternatively.

Over inside RightBlogger, you can create a super personalized MyTone that trains the AI on how to write more like you—based on your favorite writing samples (or videos) you upload.

3. Give AI Very Detailed Instructions

The more detailed you are in your prompts, the better your outputs will be.

Simple commands like “write a thousand-word blog post” aren’t anywhere near enough.

Example of ChatGPT AI Article with Simple Instructions

For a much stronger first draft written by AI tools, break down what you want with a lot of detail:

  • Word count limits (e.g., “stay under 1,500 words” or “write at least 2,000 words”)
  • Formatting preferences (e.g., “use bullet points to make it scannable” and “employ SEO best practices”)
  • Specific aspects to emphasize (e.g., “focus on latte art techniques over general espresso tips”)

I also take my AI content personalization a step further by uploading custom knowledge sources.

If I’ve written a past article or created a video that I want the AI to learn from & incorporate into my new creation, I’ll include it in the prompting process.

Tools like RightBlogger have a built-in Knowledge Library that allow you to add direct links, text snippets, or your own notes to create a mini “knowledge library” that’s accessible at anytime across all tools.

4. Why Editing AI Content is a Non-Negotiable

Once the AI generates your first draft, please don’t think your job is done.

Going from prompt to publish is a fast track to publishing content that won’t rank—or resonate—with your readers.

The initial output you get from AI is just a starting point—the real fun is just beginning.

While you’re editing, the goal isn’t to strive for perfection (whatever that means). My guide to blog editing will give you a lot more detailed instructions on this, but the core principle is that you wanna edit mostly for making the content feel like you.

As you read through the AI first draft, you’ll wanna listen to what your intuition tells you. If a sentence feels clunky, that’s because it’s not close enough to being in your own words. If the AI chose some phrases that just aren’t you, switch it up. If it feels bland, breathe some more life into the section with a quick story.

Editing your AI first draft allows you to:

  1. Add your voice: Rephrase sentences and adjust the tone to match your personality.
  2. Weave in real stories: This could be an example from your life or additional insights the AI overlooked.
  3. Fact-check: AI isn’t perfect, and its mistakes are ultimately your responsibility to correct.

I’ll usually bring my AI first drafts over into WordPress (what I use to power my blog here), which makes personalizing my AI content flow more seamlessly in an editing environment I’m familiar with.
